I purchased a laptop from an office supply store, and when I was discussing the price, the salesperson mentioned that the floor model–the one which had been on display for people to try out–would be 10% cheaper. 10% was almost $100 bucks, just for taking home something that was out of the box. I jumped on the chance and didn’t find any difference in the quality despite a small scratch on the front. This isn’t everyone’s idea of ‘new’, but if you’re looking for a way to knock a quick 50-100 bucks off of the price, it’s worth asking about display models.

Last year I bought a used Dell laptop for a couple hundred dollars from a local computer store – I got the bag with it for free. I’ve had no problems with it – its been my primary computer and its been great. Its convenient, light and slim.
My mom bought an old Mac Powerbook (Gen 2) for less than a hundred on Ebay and at first it barely worked. She took it to the Mac store and they actually upgraded it to the next level of software and now it works fine.
My computer is better, though – even if it isn’t a Mac. ; )

The best purchase I made on a laptop was my HP. Even though it came with Windows Vista, which I wasn’t quite used to and wasn’t compatible with some of my programs, it was on clearance with a rebate, and had all of the features I was looking for in a laptop. It didn’t take long to get used to the vista program, and the speed made it worth learning! I would recommend the HP to anyone who needs a laptop, as the wireless modem makes it easy to get online no matter where you may be.

Also take into account when purchasing a laptop that often prices online are less expensive than those in stores. I actually was in the market for a laptop and ventured to one of the big box stores and the young salesgirl suggested that I compare store prices with online costs. I really appreciated that advice as well as her suggestion to buy a laptop that is already loaded, otherwise the purchase of the software will increase the cost significantly.

The best laptop purchase I made was my HP Mini. I do have a desktop and another, larger laptop, but I find myself using my $250 HP Mini constantly. It is a bit slower than my other laptop, but the very light weight (about 2 pounds) and small size (less than 10″ long, less than 1″ long) makes it very easy to take with me, anywhere. I am able to watch Netflix videos, surf the web, and use any typical word processing and spreadsheet software. The mini computers are a great bargain for many computer buyers who have simple computing needs.

The memory of the notebook is 2GB RAM and the hard disk space is adequate with 160GB. There is worldwide warranty of three years; hence, if anything happens to the laptop, it can be attended by their customer care executives in any corner of the world. The internet connectivity of the notebook is fantastic too.
